Births, Deaths and Marriages in Australia
Birth, death and marriage certificates help genealogists build the basic structure of the family history tree. Certificates are kept by the Registries of Births, Deaths and Marriages in each Australian state and territory. Check the indexes listed below if you want to get a copy of an historical birth, death or marriage certificate.
Indexes
The Genealogy Centre provides access to all published indexes to births, deaths and marriages in Australia. These indexes cover different years because they are published by the state and territory Registries. The table below summarises the indexes available in the Centre.
Certificates
To obtain a birth, death or marriage certificate you must provide all details given in the index entry, including the registration number. Contact the Registry for the relevant Australian state or territory and pay the required fee to obtain a copy of a certificate. Victorian certificates may be ordered, downloaded and printed on the internet at the Victorian Registry's online shop.
