Public Libraries Unit

The role of the Public Libraries Unit (PLU) at the State Library of Victoria is to provide a link between the State Library and the Victorian public library network, and to enhance the effectiveness of public libraries for Victorian communities through cooperative activities. The unit is actively involved in:

• communication across the public library sector and its stakeholders
• coordinating industry knowledge, research and innovation
• developing and delivering projects that meet statewide public library sector needs 
• facilitating strategy development.

The Public Libraries Unit is responsible for:

• Statewide Public Library Development Projects
  These projects promote greater innovation, interaction, collaboration and sharing of ideas and resources within the public library network. 
• Statewide Network Infrastructure Project
  The Public Libraries Network though VICNET continues to ensure that ICT infrastructure, content and support services are maintained and developed on behalf of the public Library network.
• Victoria’s Virtual Library (VVL)
  VVL is the public library portal for Victoria. It consolidates existing online information resources and provides library services for Victorians that are not provided in other ways. More information>
• Open Road
  A collaborative project providing online resources and services to multicultural communities through public internet workstations in public libraries. More information>
• My Language
  

  This electronic, multicultural library service is currently being developed to enhance access to online information resources for Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) individuals and community groups.
