A new building for a new century
Spanning 15 years and costing an estimated $200 million, the State Library Redevelopment Project involved the renovation of existing buildings and the construction of new, purpose-built spaces to provide expanded onsite and online facilities and services for Library users. These included:
- new reading rooms, galleries and exhibition spaces
- increased public access to information technology
- greater availability of books and other printed materials on open shelving
- related facilities such as a cafe, shop and conference centre.
The redevelopment project is nearing completion. New spaces have been opened, collection items relocated and expanded services introduced. Once sharing its site with the Museum and National Gallery of Victoria, the Library now occupies an entire city block.
