Nanjing Library

A reciprocal exchange program between Nanjing Library - the third-largest public library in China - and the State Library of Victoria was established in 1985. The program covers the exchange of publications and staff visits.

A range of exchanges between the libraries have taken place. In 1989 the Deputy Director of Nanjing Library, Madame Wang Lingxi, visited the State Library of Victoria, and Dianne Reilly was hosted by Nanjing Library.

As part of the 25th anniversary of sister-state relations between Victoria and Jiangsu Province, the State Library of Victoria received an official delegation from the Nanjing Library on 31 May and 1 June, 2004. During this visit the Library was presented with a plaque in honour of its 150th anniversary by the Director-General of the Nanjing Library, Mr Ma Ning.

In December 2006, the State Library of Victoria hosted Nanjing Library's Deputy Director of Application of Information Technology Ms Wang Fang and Associate Research Fellow, Deputy Director, Department of Research, Ms Yang Lingxue.

Since 1985 there has been a continuous deposit of exchange materials between the two libraries.

The State Library of Victoria and Nanjing Library are currently exploring options to expand this exchange program into a three or four-year Memorandum of Understanding. Areas which will be focused on for collaborative action include staff and information exchange, reciprocal exhibitions and other cultural programs.
