Edna Walling Website

Edna Walling is renowned as one of Australia's best known and most influential garden designers. She was also a popular writer, talented photographer and charismatic personality. The State Library of Victoria holds over 4500 of her photographs, 305 garden plans, and numerous manuscripts. Many of these items have been made publicly accessible for the first time through a collaborative project with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC).

Funded by an ABC/Cinemedia Multimedia Production Accord grant, this project developed a website dedicated to this remarkable woman. Launched in September 2001, the site was created and hosted by the ABC using images and manuscripts from the Library's collections as well as photographic, curatorial and cataloguing support.

The Library's online catalogue was customised for the website's database, allowing photographs, plans, multimedia, writing excerpts and bibliographical references to be sorted by media type, title or date.

With the ABC's website attracting around 12 per cent of Australian internet traffic - over 5 million people a week - this provided an excellent opportunity for the Library to promote its collections and expertise.
