Mission Voices Website
This project was established to produce a website documenting the history of six Aboriginal missions and reserves in Victoria. Funded by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) and Film Victoria, Mission Voices is a cooperative partnership between the Koorie Heritage Trust Inc and the State Library of Victoria.
In addition to material held by the Library and the Koorie Heritage Trust Inc, the Mission Voices website will feature interviews with Aboriginal people about mission and reserve life and its impact on their communities. Supplementary material will also be sourced from the National Archives of Australia and the Public Records Office Victoria.
Rather than presenting a comprehensive historical account, this project will allow the voices of individual Koorie people to shape the story. It will include themes of spirituality, fighting for country, the struggle for justice, work and wages, everyday life, rules and regulations, education and learning, the Stolen Generations, and living culture.
Mission Voices will provide an important educational resource for all Victorians and anyone interested in this aspect of Australian history.
