Famous: Karin Catt Portraits

7 May 2007

Photographic portraits of some of the world’s best-known celebrities will be on show when Famous: Karin Catt Portraits opens at the State Library of Victoria.

Famous: Karin Catt Portraits is a free photographic exhibition ranging across popular culture, politics and religion with portraits that capture celebrity in all its contemporary manifestations. Catt’s subjects include world leaders Bill Clinton and Mikhail Gorbachev, compatriot Oscar winners Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe, as well as supermodel Naomi Campbell and boxing legend Mohammed Ali.

Catt’s portraits of Hollywood celebrities such as Matt Damon, Robin Williams and Pierce Brosnan and cast portraits of the popular television programs Desperate Housewives and House will also be exhibited along with striking portraits of musicians Eminem, Sting, Elton John, Fat Boy Slim, 50 Cent and Lou Reed.

Shane Carmody, Director of Collections and Access at the State Library of Victoria, views Catt’s work as a valuable record of our time.

‘Celebrity and fashion can be fleeting but here they are captured so wonderfully for the ages. These images are sexy and dynamic. They show a passion for photography, a love of music, fashion, travel and people. Catt’s gaze and skill with the camera allows us to share these passions in an intimate way,’ he said.

Born in Newcastle, Catt is now based in New York. At age 12 she took her first celebrity photograph and has been photographing people of interest ever since. Catt’s work has been published widely in magazines such as Vanity Fair, Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Marie Claire and Rolling Stone.
