Artist Books on Show at State Library
2 March 2007
How I entered there I cannot truly say is a new exhibition at the State Library of Victoria showcasing artist books created by some of Australia’s leading artists.
This free exhibition includes a selection of superb artist books and prints created at the ground-breaking Australian print studio, the Edition + Artist Book Studio (E+ABS) at the Australian National University in Canberra. The exhibition celebrates the art of the book, and the special relationship between the image and written word.
Over nine years, the E+ABS brought together artists, writers, print-makers and bookbinders to explore the medium of print and the book in ways that challenged their conventional art practices.
How I entered there I cannot truly say features around 90 printed works and artist books created by artists and writers working with E+ABS staff and students, under the direction of master printer, artist and lecturer Dianne Fogwell - curator of the exhibition. It includes works by Jason Benjamin; GW Bot; Fiona Foley; Euan Heng; Bruno Leti; Margaret Olley; Jorg Schmeisser; Udo Sellbach and Robyn Wallace-Crabbe.
Artists, writers and printers, were encouraged to form creative partnerships, giving them the freedom to explore ideas and experiment with new materials and techniques. The results are considered to be among the finest examples of the book arts in Australia.
Anne-Marie Schwirtlich, State Librarian and CEO of the State Library of Victoria, is excited the State Library is hosting this exhibition.
‘Here some of Australia’s finest artists have brought their particular skills to the unique medium of the artist book. How appropriate that the State Library should host this celebration of the objects we were built to house,’ she said.
The exhibition will be launched with a special day of artist book related activities on Saturday 17 March 2007 and will be complemented by a program of events including tours, curator and artist talks, and a print-making master class, as well as activities for school groups.
The exhibition is supported by Visions of Australia, an Australian Government Program supporting touring exhibitions by providing funding assistance for the development and touring of cultural material across Australia. Full program details are available online.
