The Bard’s ‘bookgig’ at the State Library
25 July 2005
The State Library of Victoria’s Centre for Youth Literature presents a special event to introduce young people to the world of Shakespeare through drama, music and a witty wordless picture book The Boy, the Bear, the Baron, the Bard. The ‘bookgigs’ for school groups will appeal to students from Year 3 to Year 8 and will take place on 24 and 25 August.
The Boy, the Bear, the Baron, the Bard by Gregory Roberts will launch children on an amazing adventure. The book is a funny, cheeky and surprising story about a boy who loses his soccer ball in an abandoned theatre and finds himself in the Globe Theatre, in Tudor London. He is chased by an irate Will Shakespeare through the streets, into a world of bear baiting, royalty and dungeons. The book has been shortlisted in the Younger Readers category in the 2005 Children's Book Council Awards.
Illustrator Gregory Rogers has a passion for Elizabethan drama and music. As well as being an internationally recognised artist, Gregory plays the cornetto, recorder and baroque guitar, performing music from the 16th and 17th centuries. He says,
‘I have always been fascinated by everything Elizabethan: the clothes, the music, the dancing, the food. When I had the idea of a story about a young boy who is flung through time to land on the stage of the Globe Theatre in Tudor London, I saw my chance to share those harsh, dirty, brutal, beautiful times with others. I made my way through a mountain of books to discover all the amazing historical details of the era then I drafted and redrafted the story to make it rich and real.’
