PictureVictoria Online
14 June 2006
The opening of the Brighton Baths in 1939, the first photographs of a VFL football game and images of the West Gate Bridge under construction in the 1970s.These are some of the thousands of historical images available on a new website, PictureVictoria, to be launched on 23 June.
The State Library of Victoria’s Vicnet group designed the PictureVictoria website and is hosting the site. More than 8,000 black and white and colour photographs, original maps, sketches and paintings relating to Victoria will be available through the new digital service.
The images are of Victoria’s buildings, events, people and places. The database of thousands of images will provide a single point of access to pictorial and photographic collections held in Victoria’s public libraries and local historical societies, and aims to complement existing services, such as PictureAustralia and the State Library of Victoria’s Picture Collection.
Users can preview images and text for free. The images cannot be used commercially, and to reproduce the image users must credit the name of the artist and the agency that owns it. The agency will determine the availability and cost of the image.
PictureVictoria will offer the public access to local history photographs and pictures that previously could only be viewed at public libraries. PictureVictoria is a Victorian local history project funded by Arts Victoria through the Statewide Public Library Development Grants.
