You Say Teenagers Don't Read?

14 February 2005

Writers include: Sonya Hartnett, Steven Herrick, Margo Lanagan, Markus Zusak, Phillip Gwynne, John Nicholson, MJ Hyland, Shaun Tan, Carole Wilkinson, Li Cunxin and more.

A highlight of the program includes the biennial conference Reading Matters, May 12-14 with:

  • Adeline Yen Mah (Chinese Cinderella & the Secret Dragon Society, Falling Leaves)
  • Malorie Blackman (Noughts & Crosses)
  • Karen Levine (Hana’s Suitcase) and Tessa Duder (Alex, Tiggie Tomson), plus David Fickling, (publisher of Northern Lights and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time)
  • leading Australian writers including Carole Wilkinson, Steven Herrick, Alwyn Evans and Gabrielle Wang.

The Centre for Youth Literature brings reading to life with events for teenagers and children. The Centre, at the State Library of Victoria, also offers inspirational professional development for teachers, teacher-librarians and public librarians. This year the focus will be on stories that explore the experience of refugees and asylum seekers; plus picture books, verse novels and graphic novels
