Robyn Archer puts Art in its Place!

5 July 2003

Cultural dynamo Robyn Archer will be ‘Putting Art in its Place’ tomorrow night at the State Library of Victoria.

The singer, writer, festival director and public arts advocate will deliver the 2004 State Library of Victoria’s Redmond Barry Lecture.

In her lecture, ‘Putting Art in its Place,’ Robyn Archer will be talking about how a city shapes and defines an arts program and reflecting on the challenge of devising a year-long program for the city of Liverpool. (The city has been named as the European Capital of Culture of 2008.)

Robyn Archer has an established record and background working as an arts advocate and performer. Currently she is the Artistic Director, Melbourne International Arts Festival, advisor to the Artistic Program of Ten Days on the Island and Member of the Australian International Cultural Council. Ms Archer was made an Officer of the Order of Australian in 2000 and Chevalier du l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2001.

The Redmond Barry Lecture celebrates both the 150th anniversary of the laying of the Library’s Foundation stone on 3 July 1854, and the enduring civic vision of Sir Redmond Barry.

The Lecture was established in 1999 by the Library and is delivered by leading cultural figures. Previous lectures have been given by former Premier of Victoria, the Hon. Jeff Kennett, by former Managing Director of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, Brian Johns and by the acclaimed science writer and commentator Margaret Wertheim.

The Redmond Barry Lecture ‘Putting Art in its Place’ by Robyn Archer is on Tuesday 6 July, 2004 at 6.30pm – 8pm in the Village Roadshow Theatrette, Entry 3, La Trobe Street. $12/$10. Bookings 8664 7016
