New Website Provides Access to Victorian Cultural Collections
30 October 2007
This morning at Federation Square, the Parliamentary Secretary for the Arts launched CV (Culture Victoria), a new online resource that utilises the rich media potential of broadband technology to provide access to Victoria’s cultural collections. CV is the public face of the Victorian Cultural Network (VCN), a Victorian Government initiative.
CV has been developed to provide access to stories and hundreds of images that cover culture in its broadest sense - for example, photos of Melbourne’s 1930s slums, interviews with Melbourne’s emerging and experienced hip hop artists, and 21 short films about football in country Victoria. It includes a listing of over 700 cultural collecting organisations in Victoria. It will be represented at each agency via a public access point as well as provide content on a public website.
The VCN has established and maintains broadband links between six cultural agencies (ACMI, Federation Square, Museum Victoria, National Gallery of Victoria, State Library of Victoria and The Arts Centre). It also links to the State Government Gateway (VGEX) and five metro-regional organisations as a 12-month pilot (Bendigo Art Gallery, Geelong Performing Arts Centre, Mildura Arts Centre, East Gippsland Library Corporation at Warragul Library, and Koorie Heritage Trust).
The rollout of public access points has already commenced at the regional organisations and the Library will be piloting a 'technology demonstrator' public access point for a month next February. The Library expects to keep developing CV and exploring more opportunities to share and present our digital content for wide use over the next four years.
