Key Bushfire Reports Available Online

25 February 2009

The Library has responded quickly to public demand and made important Victorian Government bushfire reports widely available by publishing them online.

Digital versions of five key reports on the 1983, 1977, 1944 and 1939 Victorian bushfires can now be accessed through the Library's catalogue.

The Library has been inundated with requests to view the bushfire records. The most requested documents are the Royal Commission report on the fires of 1939 and the report of the Bushfire Review Committee following the Ash Wednesday fires of 1983. Both records evaluate the causes of the fires and the preventative measures in place, and list recommendations for the future.

Many people have been keen to look at how authorities have investigated bushfires in the past. Some who have personal memories of earlier bushfires have also been interested in examining the details of these events.

Public interest in the reports is expected to continue as the royal commission into the 2009 bushfires progresses.
