Greening the Library Lawn

24 October 2007

The State Library of Victoria is preparing its front lawn for summer. Working in conjunction with the Melbourne City Council, the State Library is experimenting with various grass varieties to determine which will be best for a low-water, high-traffic environment. Reclaimed water will be used on a combination of seeded grass and rolled turf in an attempt to establish a healthy and serviceable lawn and repair the drought damage of recent months.

The central city location of the State Library lawn makes it a popular space for meeting and relaxation. The Library is working hard to ensure that its lawn remains available for public use throughout the establishment of the new turf and seeds. While certain areas will be restricted during sensitive stages of the turfing process, the Library will keep other grassed areas open so that they can be enjoyed by all. Signs will indicate which areas are restricted at any given time.

The Library hopes that you will enjoy its lawn and welcomes any feedback you may have on its restoration.
