MELBOURNE BECOMES A CITY OF LITERATURE Last week the United Nations named Melbourne the world's second City of Literature, recognising the vibrant literary culture created by its writers, publishers, libraries, booksellers and readers. The decision acknowledges the State Library's longstanding role in nurturing Melbourne's literary and cultural life, and its future support through its new Victorian Centre for Books, Writing and Ideas, due to open in late 2009. The Centre will house key literary organisations such as the Victorian Writers' Centre and Melbourne Writers Festival.

PREMIER'S LITERARY AWARDS The shortlist for the 2008 Victorian Premier's Literary Awards was announced on 8 August. Among the writers recognised across 14 categories were Nobel Prize winner JM Coetzee and Helen Garner in the fiction category, and Richard Flanagan for essay writing.
The winners will be announced by Premier John Brumby at an awards dinner at Zinc, Federation Square, on 1 September. Book now to attend this major event.

SPORT AND WAR The Australian War Memorial's travelling exhibition 'Sport and War' remains on show until 26 October. Discover inspiring stories of courage and achievement, and learn how sport and war have helped to define what it means to be Australian. POETRY SLAM RETURNS The search is on for Victoria's best slam poet. This popular spoken word performance competition starts with a workshop in Geelong on 29 September and finishes with a state final on 13 November. The top two poets will compete for $5000 at the national final in December. Not competing? Join the audience to watch the action and help choose the winners.

BA SANTAMARIA: RUNNING THE SHOW 'Running the Show' brings together a selection of documents written by BA Santamaria, and throws new light on a number of crucial episodes in his career. In the poet James McAuley's words, he 'set a match against the age's mind'. The book is the second in a series drawing upon Santamaria's writings. Patrick Morgan, the editor, is a Victorian writer and academic.
