CHRISTMAS HOURS AND SERVICES A reminder that the Library will be closed on Christmas Day and will have reduced hours and services during the remainder of the Christmas-New Year holiday period. Requests for some onsite and all offsite materials must be made in advance. In addition, the Chat with a Victorian Librarian service will be closed from 21 December until 7 January. Mr Tulk will be closed from 22 December, re-opening on 2 January.

REDMOND BARRY READING ROOM TEMPORARY CLOSURE From 11 to 20 January the floor of the Redmond Barry Reading Room will be repaired and re-coated. The Reading Room and the Magazines and Journals Room will be closed, and books and journals with the prefixes B, F and MAG will be unavailable during this period. We apologise for any inconvenience.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
INAUGURAL AGL SHAW FELLOWSHIPS AWARDED Four postgraduate students have been selected to undertake these new four-week summer research fellowships at the Library. They are Spiridoula Demetriou, Stephen Gaunson, Michael Shiell and Anne Wilson. They will use the Library's collections to research a variety of subjects, from modern Greece and Ned Kelly to ephemeral environmental art and picture shows in Gippsland.

RAMSAY & REID SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS The 2007 recipients of these fellowships, which recognise and develop professional excellence in the public library sector, were recently announced. Lesley Fell was awarded the Margery C Ramsay Scholarship. She will undertake a study tour of public libraries in Arizona and Massachusetts looking at programs designed for baby boomers. The Barrett Reid Scholarship was awarded to Pam Howard. She will look at collaborative projects delivering innovative outreach services in the UK.

COMING EVENTS
THE MEDIEVAL IMAGINATION In March the Library will open a spectacular free exhibition of medieval and Renaissance illuminated manuscripts. It will feature works from Cambridge University and its colleges, which together hold one of the greatest collections of medieval manuscripts in the western world. A rich program of events is planned, including a major conference - Imagination, Books and Community in Medieval Europe, a medieval music concert series, a lecture series, a medieval faire and programs for schools. VICTORIANS ON VACATION As your thoughts turn to holidays, why not visit our latest exhibition, 'Victorians on Vacation', open until 2 March 2008 in the Keith Murdoch Gallery. An audio tour is available from our website and from pre-loaded iPods for loan at the exhibition. On Australia Day celebrate beach holidays of the 1950s, '60s and '70s with free activities, including mini golf, flag making and book readings on the Library forecourt. You can also join a free, half-hour tour of the 'Victorians on Vacation' exhibition and pose for a holiday snap outside our caravan.

SUMMER READ EVENTS The Library's holiday reading program, The Summer Read, is now into its second month. Over the summer there will be more than 30 events featuring Summer Read authors. ONLINE SHOP SPOTLIGHT
THE LA TROBE JOURNAL NO. 80 SPRING 2007 This 40th anniversary issue focuses on the Library and its Journal, Charles Joseph La Trobe and the history of Melbourne. Keith Dunstan reminisces about researching in the Library and John Barnes writes about the La Trobe family in Van Diemen's Land. There are articles on the history of the Friends of the Library and about the creation of a portrait medallion of La Trobe by the great Victorian sculptor Thomas Woolner. There are also items on John Batman, ST Gill's 1867 drawings and the diaries of Captain Frederick Standish and Samuel Curtis Candler.
