FROM THE INFORMATION DESK

CHRISTMAS HOURS AND SERVICES
The Library will be closed on Christmas Day, 25 December. On Christmas Eve, and from Boxing Day until Tuesday 1 January, the Library will be open from 10am to 6pm. During this time, the Library will provide basic information and copying services, and will deliver requested items from onsite storage only. Other services, including deliveries and appointments to view heritage items, and requests for offsite materials will be limited.

NEW RESEARCH DATABASES AVAILABLE FROM HOME
New research databases are now available from home to registered Victorian Library users. They include World Book Online and the Ebsco databases  - Computer Source, Professional Development Collection, Psychology & Behavioral Sciences Collection, Regional Business News and Religion & Philosophy Collection.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

INKY AWARDS ANNOUNCED
More than 3000 young people from all over the world voted in the recent inaugural Inky awards for the best youth literature. Simmone Howell's novel 'Notes from the Teenage Underground' (Pan Macmillan) was awarded the Gold Inky for best Australian book, and John Green's 'Looking for Alaska' (HarperCollins) received the Silver Inky, for favourite international book.

ANNUAL REPORT RELEASED
The Library's 2006-07 annual report is now available. It can be downloaded in PDF format from our website, consulted in hard-copy in the Library's Information Centre or ordered from our online shop. Library CEO Anne-Marie Schwirtlich introduces this year's report in a brief video, viewable online.

COMING EVENTS

VICTORIANS ON VACATION EXHIBITION OPEN
The Library's new exhibition, 'Victorians on Vacation', is open from 30 November 2007 to 2 March 2008 in the Keith Murdoch Gallery. It celebrates holidays and leisure in the state with a cornucopia of photographs, posters, guidebooks, postcards and 1950s home movies. A 12-part audio tour is available for listening and downloading from our website. Digital cameras worth A$400 are up for grabs in an online photo competition. And there's also a great program of entertaining talks, tours and activities on offer over summer.

THE SUMMER READ LAUNCHED
The Library launched its holiday reading program, The Summer Read, on 20 November. In its second year, this program encourages Victorians to take a break with a great Victorian read using a recommended shortlist of 20 local books as a starting point. The program also invites readers to vote for their favourite book on the list. And for those who do, there are some great prizes to be won! Other Summer Read activities include events at public libraries around the state, Australia Day celebrations with celebrity readers at the State Library, as well as opportunities for everyone and anyone to contribute reviews and recommendations on the Summer Read blog.

POETRY SLAM STATE FINAL WINNER
After months of regional heats and workshops, the state's top slam poet was decided on 22 November at the Library. The winner, Northcote heat finalist Marc Testart received $400 and a $50 Wagamama restaurant voucher. Runner-up, Steve Smart, was awarded $200 and a Wagamama voucher. Both will be flown to Sydney for the national final on 7 December. The national winner  will receive $5000 and the opportunity to appear at the  Opera House in Spoken Word Festival in 2008.

ONLINE SHOP SPOTLIGHT

THE WORLD OF THE BOOK
