RENEWING THE LIBRARY LAWN The Library is currently preparing its front lawn for summer. We are working with the Melbourne City Council to determine which grass varieties will be best for a low-water, high-traffic environment.

STEPHEN MURRAY-SMITH LECTURE RECORDING Did you miss the recent 2007 Stephen Murray-Smith Lecture? Dr Tom Griffiths spoke about Murray-Smith's voyage to Antarctica in 1985-6 and the cultural challenge of the continent of ice. The audio is now available online, along with a transcript of the lecture. A recording of the lecture will be broadcast on the ABC on 4 November.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
INKY AWARDS On 12 November, the winners of Australia's first teenage choice book awards, the Inkys, will be announced. Developed by the Library's Centre for Youth Literature and decided by young readers, the Inkys will recognise the best Australian book, to be awarded the Golden Inky, and the best international book, to receive the Silver Inky. Voting on a shortlist of three books per category has been open to under-25s since late September. If you know a keen teenage reader, send them to the insideadog website to cast their vote now - voting closes on 5 November.

SHANE WARNE PORTRAIT The Library recently acquired a portrait of cricketing legend Shane Warne by Victorian artist David Ralph. The painting, one of only two Warne has ever sat for, is on public display in the Library's Newspaper Reading Room.

COMING EVENTS
FAMOUS - LAST DAYS! 'Famous: Karin Catt Portraits', our current Keith Murdoch Gallery temporary exhibition, closes on 11 November. If you haven't yet seen this wonderful collection of celebrity portraits, hurry in. The exhibition is open 10am-9pm Monday to Thursday, and 10am-6pm Friday to Sunday. On Melbourne Cup Day, 6 November, the exhibition will close at 5pm.

VICTORIANS ON VACATION This upcoming free exhibition traces the ways in which we have enjoyed holidays and leisure in Victoria since the 19th century - from the seaside and the ski slopes to camping and caravanning. It showcases historical and contemporary material from the Library's collection, including photographs, travel posters and guidebooks, postcards and 1950s home-movies. The exhibition will be open from 30 November 2007 to 2 March 2008 in the Keith Murdoch Gallery.

READING VICTORIA - THE SUMMER READ This summer, immerse yourself in great summer reading with the State Library's holiday reading program. Choose from the list of 20 recommended titles, and join readers all over Victoria to vote for your favourite. Participate in events at public libraries, hear celebrity readers at the State Library on Australia Day, and swap reviews and recommendations with other readers online.

BIOGRAPHY - THE IMPOSSIBLE ART? Book now to hear noted academic and writer Inga Clendinnen deliver the 2007 National Biography Award Lecture on Wednesday 7 November at the Library. She will discuss whether biography is an impossible art, reflecting on Virginia Woolf's comment that 'Biography pretends that a life can be told, when experience teaches us that it cannot...'.

CREATIVE FELLOW LECTURES November brings four more talks in this series featuring Library Creative Fellows discussing their research projects. Award-winning children's author Kirsty Murray speaks on 8 November about her latest novel, on 20 November writer Elizabeth Willis discusses gentlemen amateur collectors of Victorian Aboriginal material culture, writer Maria Tumarkin talks about her new non-fiction book 'Courage' on 22 November, and cartoonist Judy Horacek discusses her research on the concept of home and ordinary people on 27 November.

POETRY SLAM STATE FINAL After months of regional heats and workshops, the state's top 11 slam poets will strut their stuff at the state final, on 22 November at the State Library of Victoria. They will be competing for prizes, accolades and a place in the national final in Sydney on 7 December. Hosted by performance poet Philip Norton with guest artists.

TREASURES TRAVEL TO REGIONAL VICTORIA The final Travelling Treasures program for the year goes on the road in November. It will visit public libraries and schools in Horsham, Warracknabeal and Nhill between 13 and 15 November. On display will be the Lazarus Diary, the Lofty Cannon Collection, Goldfields maps and an original account of the Voyage of Governor Phillip to Botany Bay.

HISTORY COUNCIL ANNUAL LECTURE Book now to hear Professor Janet McCalman give the 2007 History Council of Victoria Annual Lecture at the Library on 29 November. She will discuss 'Fractional Identities: The Political Arithmetic of Aboriginal Victorians'.

ONLINE SHOP SPOTLIGHT
THE ART OF THE COLLECTION This lavishly illustrated publication celebrates the Library's extensive Pictures Collection, which documents the history of Victoria and its people from the early years of the colony to the present day. The collection ranges from 18th and 19th-century portraits and busts to contemporary portraits and landscapes. Among the artists represented in the book are Eugene von Guerard, Frederick McCubbin, Albert Tucker, Jan Senbergs and Howard Arkley. The book retails for $59.95 and is published by the Miegunyah Press in association with the State Library of Victoria.
