NEW INFORMATION DATABASES AVAILABLE FROM HOME
We are continually adding more databases to those that can be accessed from home by registered Victorian Library users with a current Library card. The latest additions are International Financial Statistics 1950s; the full-text databases Australian Occupational Health and Safety Online, and Consumer Health Complete (Ebsco); the full-text Literary Reference Center (Ebsco) and Auto Repair Reference Center 1945- (Ebsco).

INDIGENOUS COLLABORATIONS
On 28 March, artist and historian Dr Julie Gough spoke on the topic 'Strait Crossings: 19th-century Indigenous relocation between Victoria and Van Diemen’s Land and beyond'. The lecture marked Women’s History Month for 2007.

BOTH A PICTURE AND A THOUSAND WORDS
The keynote address by Professor Sasha Grishin from the event 'Words and images: Examining the artist book' is now available online. This day of free talks, forums and displays on 17 March celebrated the opening of the exhibition 'How I entered there I cannot truly say'.

COMING EVENTS

FLASHPOINT NEW THEATRE SERIES
This series of free theatre readings and performances features winners of past RE Ross Trust Playwrights’ Script Development Awards. At the Library in May you can see excerpts from 'Brother Boy' by Nic Velissaris and 'Killing Jeremy' by Bridgette Jane Burton. The venue fortyfivedownstairs hosts full script readings of 'Still Waiting' by Alexandra Collier and 'Do Not Go Gentle' by Patricia Cornelius.

ARTIST BOOK EVENTS
During May two free events complement our exhibition 'How I entered there I cannot truly say'. On 10 May join artist, publisher and bookbinder George Matoulas for a fascinating show-and-tell featuring artist books from the Library’s collection in 'Artist Books Revealed'. In 'Dissecting the Book' on 20 May, discover how artists Katherine Hattam, Nicholas Jones and Kylie Stillman turn books into art.

FREE STUFF FOR KIDS
'Me, Myself and I' is a delightful exhibition of children's digital artworks, currently showing in Experimedia's new Play Pod space for kids. It reveals how children understand and express ideas about self.

'Sparky Stories! Old fairytales retold by you' is a chance for kids to make their own digital picture book based on traditional fairytales. They can even record their own sound effects!

ONLINE SHOP SPOTLIGHT

CHARLES JOSEPH LA TROBE: LANDSCAPES AND SKETCHES
Through pencil sketches and paintings, La Trobe endeavoured to record the character of those parts of the world in which he found himself. His surviving sketchbooks are in the care of the State Library and are fascinating records of his travels. Author Dianne Reilly, the State Library's La Trobe Librarian, reveals not only the artistic skill in La Trobe's sketches but also their value as historical documents. Published in 1999, this book remains a landmark publication.
