FROM THE INFORMATION DESK

ELECTRONIC NEWSPAPER RESOURCES @ THE LIBRARY
In the last 18 months, the Library has purchased several electronic newspaper resources which are proving to be extremely popular with our users. These include the Times Digital Archive, NewsBank, and PressDisplay.

-The Times Digital Archive of the London Times newspaper covers the years 1785-1985.  It contains full-page images from every page of the Times and is fully searchable.

-NewsBank is an up-to-date database of news articles from Australian and international newspapers, including all major Victorian newspapers, and 33 suburban newspapers from the Leader Group.

-PressDisplay is a new type of resource for the Library, providing electronic access to current and recent editions of over 200 international newspapers. PressDisplay allows the reader to view virtual editions of newspapers which replicate the print editions in all details, including pictures, advertisements, headlines and page layouts.

NewsBank and the Times Digital Archive are accessible throughout the Library building. PressDisplay is available on selected workstations, with the best viewing on the extra large screen in the Newspaper Reading Room.

LISTEN TO MALCOLM FRASER’S LECTURE ONLINE
If you missed the extremely popular 2005 Stephen Murray-Smith Lecture, you can listen to it on the Library’s website, download it to your mp3 player, or print off the transcript and read it at your leisure. In this year’s lecture, former Prime Minister of Australia Malcolm Fraser examined one of the most controversial issues of our time - How Democracies Fight Terrorism.

UPCOMING EXHIBITIONS AT THE LIBRARY
Two new exhibitions will be opening in the Keith Murdoch Gallery and Experimedia on 18 November. Both are the result of State Library’ Creative Fellowships which were established to give scholars, writers and artists the means and the uninterrupted time to work closely with the Library’s rich collections.

‘Lost & Found’ features new paintings, prints, drawings and artists’ books by Peter Lyssiotis and John Wolseley. These are displayed alongside the rare books and pictures from the State Library’s collections which inspired them.

To read more about this exhibition see:

‘Picturing the Old People’ is a sound and video installation by multimedia artist Genevieve Grieves, consisting of a series of ‘moving portraits’ based on 19th-century photographs of indigenous Australians in the State Library’s collection.
