Policies

The Library has a range of policies which document the development and maintenance of our collection and services, and provide responses to various legislative requirements. A sample of these documents are listed below.

Collection & Resources Development

This policy provides information for our users, other libraries and the Victorian community on the scope, depth and limitations of the State Library's collection and on future collecting intentions.

Retention & Withdrawal of Materials

This is the Library's policy on the retention, withdrawal and disposal of items in the collection.

Baggage

This policy defines the size of bags and personal items that may be taken into the State Library by members of the public.

Food & Drink

This policy outlines when and where food and drink may be consumed in the Library.

Information & Communication Technology Security

These terms and conditions apply to all computer and computer-related equipment being used on the premises of the State Library.

Personal Copying

In conjunction with the related Operating Guidelines, this policy sets out the conditions under which Library users may copy collection items using personal copying equipment such as digital cameras.

Interlibrary Loans

This policy outlines the types of material that is available for loan from the State Library of Victoria to other libraries within Australia and overseas.

Australian Manuscripts Access

This policy outlines the basis upon which public access is provided to original manuscripts held in the Library's collection.

Newspaper Access

This policy outlines which newspapers are available to the public and how they can be accessed.

Digital Preservation

This document sets out the Library's policy on the types of digital objects that will be preserved and how they will be preserved.

By-laws

The Library's by-laws ensure the safety of users and the security of collections, buildings and facilities by regulating operational matters such as consumption of food and drink, and bag size.

Freedom of Information

This document states how the Library will respond to requests for access to information under the Freedom of Information Act 1982.

Privacy

The Library complies with the principles contained in the Victorian Information Privacy Act 2000 in relation to collecting and handling personal information.

Whistleblowers

The Library is committed to the aims and objectives of the Whistleblowers Protection Act 2001 which encourages and facilitates the disclosure of improper conduct by public officers and public bodies.

Legal Deposit

By law, the Library receives one copy of every book, journal and newspaper published in Victoria.
